God’s Story, Our Stories – Rivalry, Jealousy and Generosity: Genesis 3-4

Experience & Encounter

These questions are an invitation to experience your life with God. Use them on your own or in community as you seek to follow Jesus.

  1. Pastor Aaron gave two concepts of sin: Sin as pride (“I can be great, and quite easily if I’m just willing to take it”) and sin as misery (“I am not enough and God is withholding good from me”). Which of these ideas of sin resonates more with you? Why do you think that is?
  2. Pastor Aaron contrasted Cain and Abel (Genesis 4:1-16) with the story of Shiphrah and Puah (Exodus 1:15-21). Where have you seen rivalry or jealousy (instead of partnership) destroy relationships? Where have you seen generosity (instead of jealousy) build relationships?
  3. God warned Cain that sin was lying at his door and that he must “rule” over it. Has there been a time when sin lurked at the door of your life? Read Romans 6:11-18. Paul says that we are not slaves of sin because we are slaves of Christ. What do you think of Christ being the master who sets us free from sin?
