Experience & Encounter

These questions are an invitation to experience your life with God. Use them on your own or in community as you seek to follow Jesus.

  1. The 10 Commandments helped to form the people of Israel. Compare Exodus 20:8-11 with Deuteronomy 5:12-15. Notice Deuteronomy’s insertion to “remember you were slaves in Egypt.” Read Deuteronomy 15:15, 16:12, and 24:18. Why would God want the people to remember such a difficult time in their lives? What good could it bring to the people of Israel?
  2. In Genesis 1-2, we saw how human beings are created for various relationships, including with God, with each other, with themselves, and with the wider world (including animals and the land). In Genesis 3-4, we saw how all of these relationships were warped and broken. Deuteronomy 5 shows the restoration of these relationships through the 10 Commandments. What does it tell us about God that his law is meant to repair our various relationships?
  3. Look at your own life’s relationships. Keeping in mind your relationships with God, others, self, and the wider world (including your work), where is God drawing your attention right now? Where is God focusing his redemptive power in your life?
