Death: When Life Meets Its End
This sermon about death explores what the Bible says about death and how Christians can face it with confidence in Jesus Christ. It explains that death is certain for everyone, yet Christ’s own death and resurrection transform the way believers understand and experience it. In this Christian teaching on death, Pastor Aaron shows that physical life is a precious gift from God, but that there is something worse than physical death: living faithless before God. Because Jesus walked the path of death ahead of us and conquered the grave, Christians can approach their own death with hope, trust, and peace.
The sermon about death also offers practical guidance on how to prepare for death in a distinctly Christian way. It encourages believers not to avoid the reality of death but to prepare for it—by putting their spiritual life in order, making wise plans for their earthly affairs, and shaping their funeral to reflect the glory of God rather than merely remembering the individual. This Christian teaching, by Pastor Aaron Perry, on death highlights that caring for those who are dying, being present with them, and valuing the body through healthy living are all expressions of what the Bible says about death and life. In the end, the message calls Christians to walk their journey toward death differently because Jesus Christ, the author of life, has already gone before them and now walks with them through the valley of the shadow of death.
EXPERIENCE & ENCOUNTER
These questions are an invitation to experience your life with God. Use them on your own or in community as you seek to follow Jesus.
- During Advent we prepare for the second coming of Christ by preparing to celebrate the first coming of Christ. In a few weeks, we will celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, God made flesh. God the Son took on flesh and was born of a virgin and was named Jesus. Jesus also died. Each of us was born and each of us will die. What difference does it make to you that Jesus went through both of these experiences? How can you face death in confidence and faith knowing Jesus himself has died?
- What scares you about death? Maybe it is the loss of control, the care of loved ones left behind, the uncertainty of the experience. How does trust in God speak to our fears in death?
- Paul describes death as an enemy (1 Corinthians 15:26). But just as in real life, there are right and wrong ways to fight our enemies. We might fight death in a faithful way by being good stewards of our bodies. We might fight death in unhealthy ways by obsessing with youth and denying age. How have you seen people “fight death” in God-honoring ways? How have you seen people “fight death” in unhealthy ways?
